Dolly ZimmermanMiddle school can be an adventurous time for students. It is of course a transition time and often students are conflicted, curious and starry-eyed regarding the many possibilities open to them.

The sixth grader comes in with many of the rigid habits set by the demands of elementary, while the seventh grade students are somewhat more at ease with their surroundings. Eighth grade students are feeling more comfortable with the many extra-curricular activities available to them while simultaneously feeling anxious about moving on to high school.

Time in middle school is well spent as it allows the student to delve into areas that they may not have attempted and is also an opportunity for a student to take responsibility for their actions. A parent’s guidance is imperative at this age because of the many challenges.

I have been an educator for 23 years, 12 of which were spent as an elementary school counselor. I am new to Los Fresnos CISD and while the challenges may be different, the students are the same: they simply want to know that someone is keeping a watchful eye over them.
