Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to a new school year!  It is my pleasure to introduce myself to you as your child's 8th grade science teacher. Please read the following information carefully. It will provide you with the information and tools needed for your child to be successful in 8th grade science. The curriculum will cover four main concepts; Matter & Energy, Force & Motion, Earth & Space, and Organisms & Environment. All 8th graders will be taking the Science State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test in May. It is important that we work together to guarantee your success on the STAAR.

8th Grade Pre –AP Classes: Students are required to produce one major project per 9 weeks.  100% of students are required to pass all science benchmarks to stay in Pre-AP Science.  We will be working on Commended Performance on the Science STAAR.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 Composition notebook
  • Pencils and a personal sharpener
  • Blue or black pen
  • 1 Expo Marker
  • 1 Pack of Markers, 1 pack of Colored pencils and 1 pack of crayons
  • Glue bottle or glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • 1 Folder with pockets with 1 pack of loose leaf paper

The following items are assigned by class period; you are responsible to bring only those items assigned to your class period.

2nd period class only- 2 bottles of germ-X hand sanitizer

4th period class only- 2 bottles of disinfecting wipes (Lysol/Clorox)

6th period class only- 1 pair of large scissors and 1 pack of markers

7th period class only- 1 large bottle of Elmer’s glue and a pack of construction paper

Notebooks: We will be using the composition book for class notes and activities. Students are expected to take their science notebook home daily as a study resource and bring it to class daily.

Class work/ homework: Students are expected to fully participate in all classroom activities and complete all assignments given. When homework is assigned, the student must complete and turn it in at the BEGINNING of class on the due date. No late assignments will be accepted or any assignment without a name on it.

It is very important that you are in class every day. If you are absent and excused, you will have one makeup day per absence to make up your work. It is your responsibility to find out what you missed and to copy the notes taking while you were absent, and complete the assignments you missed.

Retest PolicyStudents have one opportunity to retest on a major assignment grade below a 70 by correcting the problems they missed, according to teacher-specified requirements. It is recommended that a student attends a tutorial before submitting corrections. The retest can then be taken during their lunch within 1 week from the original test date.

Tardy Policy: A student is considered tardy if they are not in their seat, with all materials, when the bell rings. After 3 tardies, the student will receive lunch detention.

Tutorials: Tutorial schedules vary, so please check the class website for the week’s tutorial schedule. They will be from 4-6 pm. After school meal and transportation is provided.
